Looking Back | A Week in Ohio

Back in early July, we spent a week visiting James’ parents in Columbus, Ohio. William was about 7 or 8 months the last time we went so we were definitely overdue for a visit.

This mama, of course, was a little nervous about traveling with an active 2 year old but he did really well (thank you iPad). We had very short layovers in Dallas both ways and William loved riding the SkyLink. I also highly recommend Starbuck’s oatmeal for breakfast on the go. Both our flights were fairly early in the morning so being able to grab that and then get on the plane was easy. The only hard part was explaining to William that he couldn’t feed himself. I really didn’t want to clean up that mess.

We actually arrived in Ohio on James’ birthday, so that evening we had dinner with family and his mom made him a cake. It was a nice start to the trip. Amy also pulled out a lot of James’ old toys from when he was little. I loved seeing William playing with them.

The week was pretty low key. I really wanted to keep William on his normal schedule so a lot of outings were done in the morning. Trips to the park, like this one were a lot of fun. I know William loved them.

This little cutie attached herself to William for a good while and did everything he did. She definitely matched his energy level!

Helping Oma and Opa in the kitchen was one of William’s favorite things to do. Mixing eggs or helping Opa with his smoothie.

I love the yard surrounding Mark and Amy’s house. It’s so green and lush compared to Austin in July. The weather was pretty wonderful while we were there.

A trip to see Opa’s bus and take a ride was a definite must. I don’t think William knew what to do being so up close and personal. Looking at the pictures now, he just loves them! I’ll have to make some larger prints for his new big boy room.

They had to do a bus check prior to taking a ride. Walking around, checking the fluids and tires.

Then it was time for a ride!

This child has a growing school bus collection. I think he’s up to 6 or 7 now. He really does love them and has an eagle eye for them when we are driving around town.

Another pool day and keeping Daddy and Opa cool.

Amy’s office hosted an event at the Columbus Zoo while we were there so we spent the morning checking out some animals, riding a train, a comodo dragon and a boat through Dinosaur Island. William did not want to get off the boat. The dinosaurs were lifesize and I thought for sure he’d be afraid but he loved it.

An almost family photo. Oops!

Sunday morning while James and his mom had breakfast, I went with Mark and William for donuts and to another great park. This is the biggest donut he’s ever had and he only wanted it for the sprinkles, which he ate off the top. He also ate the whole donut save for a couple bites. Good thing we went to the park afterwards!

How cute is the wagon! Also one of James’ old toys.

More family time and a friendly poker game. Aunt Jenna and William opted for some Lego and Sophie time instead.

Our final evening, a new family photo was a must. Even new baby #2 kind of made an appearance (baby bump)!

Rainy Day Date | 07.17.2013

Last week William and I were a bit stir crazy. It had been raining off and on, the backyard was muddy and we needed to escape! I needed this guy to burn some energy and take a good nap for me too. After running into Buy Buy Baby we headed for Target and some window shopping. It’s the first time I’ve ever let him just wander the store. He loved the clothing section with all the hangers and this Monsters University display. I was pretty impressed that he didn’t try to pull everything off the shelves.

After Target, we stopped at Chick-fil-a. I had lunch while he had a snack and a few of my fries. He loved sitting in the booth, looking out the window and people watching.

He took a great afternoon nap and then it was time to play in the rain!

It’s days like this that make being William’s mom 100x more awesome. I really love life with this little guy.

Family on the Fourth

For the 4th of July we did an overnight trip to join the rest of my family at my sister’s house in Castroville. It was a tight squeeze with 7 adults and 2 babies but it was a blast and I am so glad we went. My younger sister and her husband are leaving on their European tour this week so it was nice to get us all together again before that. Next time we are together will be Port Aransas in August!

William’s newest interest are stairs. He is good at going up but still unsure about the coming down. He loved being in a new environment though with so many new toys.

Playing with Maria and her cousins.

For lunch we had all-American hamburgers and hot dogs and lots of laughs.

Maria has a little person table that William loved. He would pretend to cook and mix things. He even ate his meals at it and did really well. I am not on the hunt for one on CraigsList.

Having a serious conversation with Tia Adriana.

This was my drink of choice for the day…Sangria with vodka and tonic water. Yeah…I had 3 of these. They went down way too easy.

My pretty sister, Jessica.

Mom and Adriana made a delicious sponge cake with strawberry filling.

James turned 30 on Monday so I made his favorite chocolate cake so we could celebrate with family. At his request I added a thin graham cracker crust that turned out pretty good. I may make it thicker next time though.

William enjoyed the strawberry cake.

The only shot of the birthday boy.

After naps, it was water time! They did so well playing together and stayed in the water a lot longer than we expected.

The red bin was a big hit.

Love, love, love these photos.

Dinner time and then some playtime on the big bed before bedtime.

We tried to stay out for some fireworks but the mosquitos were so bad and it was past William’s bedtime. I don’t think he cared for the noise anyway. I didn’t even get a photo of the fireworks.

The next morning we had a few (just a few) donuts and some delicious breakfast tacos. I was full until dinner.

Tia Adriana doesn’t have locks on her kitchen cabinets.

My sister’s neighborhood was very patriotic. This is just one of the decorated homes. I had to grab a shot on our way out.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

Menu | Week of 07.01.2013

I fell off the wagon again…last week was so lazy in terms of meals. Don’t worry, we still had food and ate. I just didn’t have a menu. I also went to the grocery store with a small list. I was so afraid of spending $200 again! I am seriously considering putting beans and rice on the menu multiple times this week but won’t (you’re welcome, James).

Monday | Well, I didn’t make it to the grocery store today. We goofed off instead so that will happen tomorrow. So for dinner, it was chicken salad. I’ve actually been enjoying a lighter dinner here lately.

Tuesday | Couscous Crusted Salmon with a veggie side

Wednesday | Quesadillas – My friend had one today with goat cheese and spinach. It sounds really good. Maybe I’ll try that with some chicken and mushrooms.

Thursday | William and I are off to Castroville for a night.

Friday | Going to a wedding!! I get to dress up!

Saturday | Personal Pizzas – I use Naan bread and make a few different toppings – mushrooms, red onion, seasoned ground turkey, feta or goat cheese or mozzarella, broccolini. I’ve also use red pepper pesto instead of sauce for a nice change.

Sunday | I may marinate some of the frozen chicken I have and then roast it with some veggies on the side. Maybe some mashed potatoes or mac n’ cheese too.

Sorry, not too many recipes this week. I am going to try to keep things simple.
