Dressember and Human Trafficking Awareness Month

For many of you who know me (personally or via social media), you know I just finished my third year of advocating for Dressember. I felt like it was the best year yet because my team raised over $20,000! Also, there seemed to be so much more media and publicity for Dressember which is amazing. Raising awareness is just as important as raising money.

For those of you who may not see all my posts, don’t know what I am talking about or maybe got tired of seeing a bunch of girls in dresses in your feed for a month, this post is for you. I’d like to share more about how I got into Dressember and why I continue to do it.

First of all, you may be asking, what is Dressember? Good question. It’s an international campaign of advocates committing to wearing a dress everyday for the month of December to raise funds and awareness as a way of aiding in the fight against sex trafficking. The money raised by advocates is given to Dressember partners, A21 and IJM. This year they added McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center. These organizations do the work of investigating, rescuing and restoring the lives of those affected by human and sex trafficking.

You may also ask, why a dress? The dress is the uniform and flag of our movement. The dress in this case is used as a symbol of freedom and power. Reclaiming something that may show us as weak individuals into something that shows strength and confidence. I shared this before on social media, but there was a time in my life when I was only allowed to wear a dress or skirt. So for a time I disliked them very much. To me they did not represent being modest or ladylike, they represented someone who wanted to control me and make decisions for me. So to give up a month of jeans and only wear dresses was a big sacrifice. As I continue to do it, it continues to be easier and something I see as a joy to be able to do for others.

When I first heard about Dressember and did more research to find out what it was all about, I quickly said yes! This is something I want to support. The statistics I read, stories that were shared, appalled me. It was especially the scenarios that involved little children that were abhorrent to me and became my main reason for advocating. These babies who had their innocence stolen from them broke my heart. I knew I had to help them. I am a SAHM to two amazing boys that keep me busy. I am not able to find these innocents and wrap them safely in my arms but I can wear a dress everyday. I can spread the word about these crimes and educate others to fight for them as well. Did you know that about 2 million children are currently exploited in the the global commercial sex trade? Some days it’s difficult to want to wear a dress, when it’s cold or when I walk to the park with the boys or sit on the floor to read a book to them. But how much more is their pain? I have nothing to complain about.

Dressember campaigns remain open even after December 31st because January is Human Trafficking Awareness month. The goal is $2 million dollars and as of today, it’s about $12,000 shy of hitting that goal. There are still plenty of days remaining in the month to meet this goal and I’d like to ask you, reading this now to consider donating for the first time or maybe again. $5, $10, $100. January is also my birthday month and I’d love nothing more than knowing we reached our goal. What a gift not only to me but those who this money will help. Asking for money isn’t always the easiest thing but I have no problem doing it for the victims and survivors of human trafficking.

The link to my campaign is here should you like to donate or learn more. Feel free to comment or message me too if you want more information.

09.26.2013 | A Trip to The Natural Gardener

Moms, this is a great place to take your little ones if you need to burn off some of their energy. In addition to all the plants you can buy (that you may or may not really need), you can visit the goats, chickens and donkeys. They also have some great landscaped areas and water falls. William and I will definitely be back when the weather cools down a bit more. I also have my eye on some blueberry bushes.

And a few photos from my iPhone.

We started off the adventure with lunch at Taco Cabana with Grandma. This boy loves beans and rice.

DIY Painted Kitchen Table

We’ve had this table since we got married. It was a gift from an old roommate and a blessing because we didn’t have a budget for a lot of furniture in the beginning. I love how small it can be but also with two leaves, it’ll fit at least 10 people. Perfect at the holidays. The original chairs we quickly replaced and then talked about how we could change the table to better fit our style. Well, we talked about it for 5 years. We couldn’t decide what we wanted to do….stain or paint? This was the original look – natural pine. It wasn’t bad actually and contrasted with the dark stained chairs.

The Friday night of Labor Day weekend, after dinner, I suggested we redo the table. James had a three day weekend and we didn’t have any plans, it was a great idea. After a little Pinterest-ing (you know, Googling on Pinterest), we were off to Home Depot for supplies and Harbor Freight for a hand sander (James was very excited for a new power tool). My goal was to stay under $60 to stain the table to match the dark wood of the chairs.

All day Saturday was spent doing a light sanding on everything because it had a thin, clear finish. On Sunday, I started staining the legs just to see how the stain would take and look. We went with an American Walnut because we couldn’t find a stain that would match the chairs exactly. We thought that would look funny so we decided to go with something darker that wasn’t as dark but would still contrast.

I am not sure if we did something wrong, like not sand enough or not have enough patience, but the American Walnut wasn’t working for us. It looked orange on the pine and not much darker than what it was before. Maybe after 3 or 4 coats it would have worked? I don’t know. Not an expert. So after some discussion, it was back to Home Depot for a darker stain.

Ebony to be exact. I did a small section to see what it would look and nope, not a good look. Again, maybe we weren’t patient enough or knowledgeable enough to work with stain and should have kept going but we were tired of wasting time and money. With two days gone and our $60 budget blown it was time to make a decision.

It was back to Home Depot for primer and paint. White paint. Yes, we probably should have done this to begin with because now that it’s finished I love the look.

On went a coat of primer, two coats of paint and 3 coats of poly. It took a full week with drying times and our schedules.

There was more sanding involved (I hate sanding) after primer coats and in between poly coats. It probably could have been sanded more but we wanted out kitchen table back. This is William and I laying on the kitchen rug, having a snack.

We used foam brushes for the legs and apron and a sponge roller for the table top both for painting and priming.

You can see it’s not as smooth as it should be. It’s most definitely far from perfect but I still love how it came out.

I used a satin paint but a semi-gloss poly for a little shine. I didn’t want it to be too matte and feel rustic.

We thought about adding a red stripe around the edge of the table to match the orange table but I decided against it at the last minute. This is not the American Red Cross headquarters.

The finished table! We’ve been using it a few weeks now and it’s been a nice change. I love how it brightens the kitchen and looks against my rug.

If you want more information on steps and supplies, I can tell you what we used and my steps or you can check out this gals blog. I used the same primer and tools she did. For the paint I went with Behr. I wanted to keep track of how much we spent too but after the 3rd trip to Home Depot, I gave up. Pretty sure it was more like $100 and not $60. Since the table didn’t cost us anything, I think it all balanced out in the end and 5 years later we have a new to us table.

Even though James and I worked well together on this project, I don’t think we are DIY-ers at heart. We won’t be going YHL on you here anytime soon and that is ok with me. I’d like to re-tile two of our bathrooms here soon. You better believe I’ll be hiring a pro.

A Weekend for Us

Weekends are so much better when you aren’t fighting a cold. Friday we were able to spend time with my sister, her husband and Maria. They came into town for the weekend. Cousin time is very important and they actually play together more now! I love this shot. Adriana is reading the Wheels on the Bus to Maria and William is listening. Of course he found a puppy dog to hang onto.

After nap time we went back to Grandma’s for dinner. Matt and Adriana were in town because some friends of theirs were also in town from Spain where they are missionaries. Her friend, Dziu made Tomato Gazpacho and tortilla with tapas. Spanish tortillas are quite different – egg and potato. More like a frittata. Delicious!

Maria girl is such a hoot! She is so funny. At one point during the evening she was running around with a bucket on her head, yelling bucket! Later on she had a flashlight and was yelling light. Such joy.

Saturday morning I was determined to be productive. My intention was to trim the bushes on one side of the house. Well, I never made it to that side. Instead we cut down a crepe myrtle that was too close the house. It needed to be done and James got to use power tools so it’s all good. William announced it “all gone!”

Sunday was the highlight of the weekend. We invited our neighbors over for brunch so the boys could have a play date. Their son, Conor is 3 months younger than William.

I love to entertain. I love to set a pretty table. I love to cook good food for people. It’s my thing. Sometimes I worry that I do too much and intimidate people but I can’t help it. I just don’t feel right not making it special.

I set the table Saturday night because one, I have an 18 month old and two, it’s just so much fun. I also chose menu items that were easy to prepare or that could be prepared the night before. One thing I hate to have happen is that I am rushed when guests arrive or that I am still cooking. I want to be with my guests, not in the kitchen.

I ended up going with a slightly fall feel on the table. All oranges, reds and browns. I absolutely love fall.

The night before I also prepped all my fruit and made the French Toast Muffins.

On the menu:
Coffee
Mimosas
Fruit salad
French Toast Muffins
Avocado Breakfast Casserole

Ya’ll, I felt so proud with how everything came out. Seriously, it was so delicious. I will be making the French Toast and Casserole again and again. Anyone want to come for brunch soon?

It was a great morning and we had so much fun watching the boys play together. How handsome are they in their plaid shirts and khaki shorts?

This was exactly the kind of weekend we needed. It was so rejuvenating. Now, onto a busy week!
Hop on over to the Vignette blog and check out William’s 18 month photos. You’ll want to see these!
