Lucas’ 4th!

Now that I revived the blog, I may be doing some “throwbacks”.

Last November, we celebrated Lucas’ 4th birthday. Here is his last night as a 3 year old!

It’s amazing how much different he’s changed since then. He’s loosing that baby/toddler look in his face. So not ready for 5!

For dinner we went to Mesquite BBQ so he could have a corn dog and fried okra.

A little about Lucas….

He likes fruit, graham crackers and cream cheese, breakfast tacos, toast, cereal, waffles, pancakes, yogurt, cheerios, raisins, chips, pretzels, tomatoes, donuts, cupcakes, ice cream, popcorn, pecans, almonds, granola, kombucha and cheese pizza when he’s in the right mood.

He LOVES his stuffed animal friends. All of them have to be in bed with him and I think there might be about 20. Bears, dogs, alligator, fox, school bus, Roxy (a shrunk T-Rex), Gold (a monkey), his other monkeys, turtle…..all of them. But I especially love how he makes up stories about them, how he cares for them and their feelings. It’s the sweetest thing that I never want to end.

He loves to play LEGOs with brother which usually means finding all the tiniest pieces there are and hoarding them in a bag or his pockets. His favorite are LEGO men.

Last fall he was super into dominoes and marble runs. Now he just likes to carry the marbles around. We find them everywhere.

He really enjoys books with lots of details and things to study. He will sit for a good while staring at the same page, just studying. Both he and William are into LEGO City books and the Bernstein Bears plus Mo Willem’s Gerald and Piggie books.

He is doing awesome on his balance bike and I think we’ll be moving him to something bigger by the fall. His legs just need to be a bit longer. But he can really keep up! He loves the park, taking walks and climbing the thunderdome in the backyard.

He’s really at a point where he wants to do so much more and a lot more by himself. I try to allow that but he’s my mischevious kiddo. If it’s too quiet, time to check on him!

He’s done so well at school this year and loves his teachers. The best thing is to hear him singing songs he’s learned in chapel. When he is at home with us, I try to include him in our school as much as possible or have some work all his own. He’s just beginning to read 3 letter words and does a great job sounding them out!

Lucas, you are Mommy’s sunshine boy. I love your happiness and how you can quickly loose the blues and be back to all smiles. You are so sweet and caring and I hope you never loose that. I love your imagination and your snuggles. I hope you always dance to the beat of your own drum and never worry what other’s think of you. You are a free spirit with a zest for life I envy but love to see. Love, Mommy (I can hear you calling from your room so rest must be over!)

Sweet Berry Farms | Fall 2016

I’ve been wanting to take the boys back to Sweet Berry Farms for a while now and it just wasn’t working out until this past fall. We met Jessica, Nathan and Sofia there for some pumpkin, hay ride, barrel train fun.

These are all big plants now that you can go pick from! Maybe another trip for strawberries is in order?

Lucas rode the train too….as I walked along beside him and held his hand. It was cute.

Day Out With Thomas 2015

I’ve wanted to take William to see Thomas for a year or so now. I think it was the right age for him though so I am glad we waited. Even though he is into Chuggington way more than Thomas, I figured it was a real train and he’d like it regardless. I have to say he wasn’t as excited as I thought he’d be or maybe he was really excited and not sure how to express it? He is quite the observer and just absorbs things so maybe that’s what he was doing. He did ask to ride Thomas again and almost put up a fight when it was time to go, so I guess that means he had fun.

We met our friends and old neighbors there so the boys rode the train together. It was a perfect day, overcast and not too hot. We even had a small shower. Lucas was quite the trooper and did really well too.

This kid…I can’t believe him. He’s standing on the arm rest and hanging onto the window…probably with his teeth! Haha!

William and Conor…

They stood in line forever for this sno-cone and I think he had like 4 bites.

I didn’t think we’d stand in line to do photos with Thomas but I was like hey! We came all this way…why not? It actually wasn’t too bad and the pictures turned out pretty cute.

Poor Lucas was a little hot….

Fun trip and I’d definitely do it again!

Evening with Friends

With baby number 2 on the way soon, I wanted to have a girl’s night just for fun and to also celebrate the baby without it being a baby shower. I guess it was more about time with some special ladies, good food and lots of laughs. I know it was much needed for myself and I think everyone had a great time.

Jessica welcomed us all into her home and I put together a simple menu of finger foods. Not pictured are the multiple bowls of candy scattered around the kitchen and living room. Gummy candy was a must!

I wanted to play off the nursery woodland theme and add a touch of fall with the table setting.

I love how it turned out! It brings me such joy to entertain and be able to share this with friends. I love putting pretty things together. It’s my way of saying thank you and telling people how special they are to me.

I chose 3 or 4 desserts and sent them to Jessica and told her to pick one and surprise me. She went with a pumpkin tiramisu that was amazing!! It was so light and flavorful. I adore pumpkin. She is a dessert master.

It truly was a wonderful evening. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful community of ladies around me who are such an encouragement and support. Love you all!!

Thanksgiving 2013 | Eating, Traveling and Painting

We had a quiet Thanksgiving which was nice. I kept wanting more people to join us or something but in the end it was exactly what we needed. We hosted and my mom, Jessica and Nathan joined us for the day.

The day before I did as much prep work as I could – put together my sweet potatoes and rolls, made my pecan pie. I also put the salt rub on the bird. William even helped a bit which he loves to do. The dinner rolls I make can also be made into cinnamon rolls so I did one recipe but only made half into dinner rolls so we could have a few cinnamon rolls while we watched the parade. They are the best!

William helped me roll out the dough and spread it with butter, cinnamon and sugar. He loved to sample whatever he could as well.

Thursday morning I was up early to finish up the turkey and get it into the oven. I had to cook the bacon for the Brussels Sprouts and bake the cinnamon rolls before it was ready to go in. Funny story….I don’t have a pan big enough for an 18 pound turkey so I bought a foil pan. It should have worked fine but I put a metal rack in it to set the bird on. When I went to put it in the oven the “feet” on the rack put a hole in my pan and the 2 cups of chicken broth in the pan ended up in my oven. Ugh! I managed to get it back out and the broth didn’t make too big a mess but now I was without a pan. I called my mom and she stopped in at Randall’s on her way over for another pan. She saved the day! We ended up eating a little later than planned but I was just glad it wasn’t a bigger disaster.

I was really looking forward to watching the parade with William even though he was bouncing around the room and didn’t sit still much. A few of the balloons and shows caught his eye though. He really liked the Sesame Street float.

Ta-daaa! This turkey was really good, I loved the salt rub recipe. Basting it with lemon juice and olive oil kept it moist and gave it a pretty color.

I made a trip to Target on Wednesday to buy flowers for the table but I couldn’t bring myself to pay $10-15 for those small bunches they sell so I came back home and put together the table with what I found around the house. A remnant of material I use to use at bridal shows created a runner. A small cake stand topped with oranges and surrounded by a couple pumpkins and candles. Then my favorite brass candlesticks and an orange, vintage mug filled with ajuga from the back yard. I loved the touch of purple! So I didn’t spend a thing on it and I loved the results.

Mom made a pumpkin, cream cheese pie from Paula Deen and I made a chocolate chip bourbon pecan pie. I didn’t get a photo of my sister’s peach cobbler but it was tasty too!

About to carve the bird and then dig in!

There was corn pudding, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, Brussels Sprouts, gravy, stuffing and three kinds of cranberry sauce! So much food and all of it was so good! I ate really slow to enjoy every bite.

William napped during the first part of our meal and then joined us for some oranges and dinner rolls.

During our meal, I asked everyone to share something they were thankful for that wasn’t expected. Like, something other than the normal things we always say. It was a little harder to come up with something but I liked what was shared. James is grateful for technology that keeps families connected over long distances and I am thankful that I can stay at home with William.

There was some playing and napping and football watching during the course of the day. Jessica, mom and I played Scrabble which was a lot of fun. I hadn’t played in a while. I love that game! Jessica won but it was a close game. Next time, sister!

Friday morning we slept in (praise the Lord!) and then got ready to leave for Castroville. We wanted to spend some time with Adriana, Matt and Maria and I was also doing family photos for Matt’s family. The weather warmed up a bit so it was a nice day to travel and take photos. Jessica and Nathan came for the day too.

Even after a day of fun and lots of playing, William had a pretty rough night and wouldn’t go to sleep. Our plan was to come home Saturday but we ended up leaving Castroville at midnight. I am glad it’s not that far and we were able to get him back in his own bed. It’s usually a guessing game when it comes to him and sleeping in different places. The last time we visited them he did great. Oh well.

Since we had our whole Saturday with no plans we decided to do some yard clean up and paint our half bath. I was impressed with how much we were able to do! I love productive days and now our yard looks better and we finally got rid of the yellow. Only took us 4 years…the new color is a greenish gray called Olivewood.

William was our supervisor when he wasn’t busy climbing the step ladder.

It’s been a busy few days so I am looking forward to a lazier Sunday with my boys. I hope everyone had a relaxing and family filled Thanksgiving as well. I am so grateful for my family and all the time we are able to spend together. Now, we can get things ready for Christmas!

A Weekend in Castroville | 11.2013

Last weekend we went for a two night stay in Castroville with Adriana, Matt and Maria. I wanted to help her with any organizing or cleaning before the baby came and also just hang out. I miss not having them closer. I want Maria and William (and his soon to arrive cousins) plenty of time together as they grow up.

William did 100x better than the last time we stayed with them. He didn’t fuss about going to bed or taking naps which was great. The time change on Sunday did mess him up a bit though and we were up pretty early that day as well as Monday. Sleeping in the same room with him isn’t ideal though with all the noise he makes and then we are like extra careful to not make too much noise either but it works. I am just glad the screaming and crying was at a minimum.

Castroville is such a cute small town and all decked out for fall which I love. We went out Friday night to explore Nite in Old Castroville. Let’s just say it wasn’t First Thursday on SoCo. Still an adventure nonetheless with a sleepy 20 month old.

We were looking for food but all we found was a small trailer so we opted for tacos to go on the way home which were amazing.

I can’t get enough of the historic homes! I would live here especially with that yellow!! I’d be on the porch all the time.

Stopping to say hello to the kittens. I think Maria needs one.

I want to check this place out the next time sans kids. Looks fun!

Friday night I helped Adriana finish up a batch of kolaches while we watched Despicable Me 2. She had the dough and toppings all ready so I helped form and top. They were delicious and actually better the next morning. I had brought a jar of Pumpkin Butter from Trader Joe’s for Matt’s birthday so we broke into it for a few toppings as well. Such a good idea.

She also did cheese and strawberry. They were all wonderful combos and I want to make them again.

William and Maria are quite the pair. Taking things from each other was the theme of the weekend.

For dinner Saturday night Adriana whipped out a couple pizzas.

Maria was a taste tester and helped pat the dough out….when she wasn’t stealing bites. She is just like her mama, loves dough.

After William ate dinner he joined the party and kept an eye on the toppings until cheese came into the picture. Then both of them were snacking on cheese.

Yum! I could go for a slice of this now…..

Sunday morning was very long with the time change and getting up at 5:30am. After a lazy morning (and a little cleaning on my part) we headed off to the Le Chat Noir for brunch in the courtyard. I only took a couple photos on FB and Instagram because I just wanted to enjoy the surroundings, food and people. The food was so delicious, I can’t wait to go back.

Love this shot of them drinking water and eating cereal for snack. William would sneak some out of Maria’s bowl when his was empty. Smart boy.

Looking forward to more time with them this weekend!

Hop on over to the Vignette blog for more photos from our weekend.
